Housework
When you think of a common girl job , what comes to mind? Cooking? Cleaning? Housework? While it might seem like housework is less common now that so many people do it only part-time, according to a recent study , it’s actually still far and away a woman’s most common job.
So what exactly is a common girl job, and why should you know if your idea matches up with that description? Well, here are some things you should know about common girl job .
Child Care
A common girl job (no matter what country you live in) is taking care of children. Of course, there are lots of different ways to go about it.
In some countries, a lot of families rely on grandparents or extended family members for child care; in others, daycare centers are far more common.
Regardless of where you live, there’s sure to be a plethora of child-care positions out there for you—and we’re not just talking about babysitting.
Professional Careers
The most common girl job is that of an administrative assistant. In total, there are more than 20 million administrative assistants across America, making up approximately 4% of all working women in America.
While a number of these jobs are low-paying, entry-level positions that require only a high school diploma, some high-end offices have replaced executive assistants with paid interns who work for college credit and little to no pay.
The high end of the career pays nearly $40,000 per year but is highly competitive to get into.
Work in Low-Skilled Jobs
In 2016, more than 1.2 million women were working in jobs that pay less than $10 per hour—commonly known as pink-collar jobs.
So, while it may not be surprising to hear that many women work in low-skilled jobs, what may surprise you is that these so-called pink collar jobs are actually some of America’s most common girl jobs.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics’ data shows that retail sales workers (which tops the list) and cashiers make up more than 9 percent of all female workers—making them far more common than your stereotypical secretary or nurse.
For example, retail sales worker is also one of America’s most common boy jobs. And when we look at occupations with higher average salaries for women, we see a similar trend.
Some of these positions—like executive assistants and bookkeepers—have a lower number of total employees compared to other common girl jobs like retail salesperson or teacher’s aide, but they still make up a significant percentage of female employment.
This suggests that there are two key factors at play here: First, there seems to be an overrepresentation of women in certain professions overall; second, within those professions there seems to be an overrepresentation of lower paying positions.
To put it another way: While men tend to dominate high-paying fields like engineering and computer science, women tend to dominate low-paying fields like social work and teaching assistantships.
Homemaking
A common girl job is homemaking. The girls who do homemaking are usually daughters, wives, and sisters.
There are many different kinds of jobs for a homemaker like laundry, cooking, cleaning and taking care of children to name a few.
Some girls don’t like doing housework as a job but some really enjoy it! Do you know what kind of homemaker you would be? Maybe one day you will be one too! But remember that there are lots of other common girl jobs out there!
Stay Single
Millennials and Generation Z, contrary to popular belief, are not looking for marriage—at least not yet. A study found that nearly a third of young women ages 18 to 29 would rather be happy than in love.
If you’re one of these many girls who don’t want to get married or have kids anytime soon, your most common girl job is waiting on tables in restaurants and bars (which also happens to be one of our favorite jobs).
Not only can you make decent money while staying single, but at many upscale places (read: fine dining spots), good tipping patrons abound. Perhaps it’s time to leave that soul-sucking 9-to-5 gig and start a new career as an elite server.
